Tutto Bene's Basel Department Store Redesign
Tutto Bene studio revitalizes Globus Basel department store's fashion floors and private shopping area, blending stark materials like concrete and steel with elegant drapery and illuminated paper. The design prioritizes the store's historic Art Nouveau facade, creating a 'quiet' interior that highlights the fashion items while offering a distinct, intimate 'Collector's Apartment' experience with a monochrome blue palette and curated art.
In Mumbai's bustling Versova suburb, the Gingham Dreams apartment stands as a testament to the elegant integration of geometric patterns into residential design. Encompassing 278 square meters, this multi-generational dwelling, conceptualized by MuseLAB founders Jasem Pirani and Huzefa Rangwala, masterfully employs the grid as a foundational design element. The simplicity of the grid provides both structure and a canvas for creativity, manifesting in various forms throughout the space, from expansive flooring to intricate furniture details, ensuring a sense of continuous flow while highlighting the uniqueness of each area.
Upon entering the apartment, residents are greeted by a door adorned with a two-toned veneer in a checkerboard motif, leading into an expansive, open-plan living, dining, and study area. Here, the floor showcases pastel-colored marble laid out in a grid, accented with organic and geometric shapes that are mirrored in the ceiling's moldings. Further enhancing the design narrative, a slatted wooden screen, reminiscent of traditional Japanese shoji, gracefully separates the study from the main communal spaces. The consistent use of a refined material palette, featuring four distinct types of marble, is evident in the custom inlay work, surface finishes, and furniture, all unified by a harmonious color scheme that includes fiery coral, soft blue, warm beige, and serene Lake Placid green.
The thematic exploration of grids extends into the private quarters, where each of the four bedrooms features checkerboard-patterned doors. The primary bedroom boasts a veneer-clad dropped ceiling that echoes the geometric flooring of the main living area, while the children's room presents a striking wall with a rectangular grid from which twin beds appear to emerge. Wardrobes in this space are embellished with mosaic patterns in coral and pastel green, reflecting the apartment's vibrant yet cohesive aesthetic. Additional details such as mosaic-style wainscoting, latticed lampshades, and pixelated bathroom tiles further reinforce the overarching design philosophy, with many furnishings featuring pixelated upholstery in earthy tones, creating a home that is both cohesive and visually engaging.
This dwelling beautifully embodies a philosophy where structure and spontaneity coexist, fostering a nurturing and imaginative environment. It's a space designed not just for living, but for creating lasting memories and reinforcing togetherness within a family, proving that thoughtful design can elevate everyday life into an art form.
