A Montreal-based design firm, Atelier Carle, has recently completed a dermatology clinic in Ontario, focusing on creating an atmosphere that feels distinctly different from conventional medical facilities. The OAKV clinic, situated in Oakville, a suburb of Toronto, offers both medical and cosmetic dermatological services, and its design philosophy prioritizes a more welcoming and tranquil environment for patients. The studio aimed to move away from the often sterile and uninviting nature of medical spaces, instead crafting an interior that evokes the comfort and luxury of a high-end spa.
The design team tackled the inherent challenges of the clinic's location within a nondescript business center, which presented issues of limited privacy and insufficient natural light. To address these concerns, the 7,500 square feet interior was meticulously reconfigured. Treatment rooms are thoughtfully arranged around a central, two-story reception and waiting area, which acts as the heart of the clinic. This central space is enveloped in warm walnut paneling and features a coffered ceiling grid that integrates with a skylight, allowing soft, natural light to permeate the area. The flooring is a striking terrazzo, with lighter strips mirroring the ceiling grid, and a minimalist reception desk crafted from the same material. Adding an artistic touch, panels adorned with figurative line drawings subtly conceal the waiting area, furnished with comfortable red velvet club chairs, further enhancing the spa-like ambiance.
Beyond the primary waiting area, the clinic extends its inviting design into specialized zones. Adjacent to the reception, a café area is revealed through sliding perforated panels, featuring vibrant green tiles arranged in a distinctive triple-stack pattern. Darker green curtains cover the walls, complemented by a metal grate ceiling that echoes the stainless steel used for various surfaces. A central island in the café includes a semi-circular sink and a cantilevered bar counter with walnut stools, providing a sophisticated and functional space. On the other side of the reception, a boutique area offers a similar design language but substitutes the green tones with a matte chocolate brown, and features a concrete floor. These distinct yet cohesive public zones are strategically designed to provide a gentle transition for patients as they move towards the treatment rooms, which are accessed via corridors bathed in soft, muted lighting. This deliberate design ensures that the clinical journey feels more akin to a relaxing spa retreat than a typical healthcare visit, reflecting a broader contemporary trend in medical architecture to prioritize patient well-being and comfort through thoughtful design.
